When Im not wrenching I like being out here:
Today we’re running a free clinic, trying to attract some more kids to our junior olympic team. I’m working with one of our current team members, and my co-coaches are working with some of the new p rospects.

What do you normally shoot with?

The team shoots both .177 caliber air rifles, mainly Feinwerkeb au 700s, and .22 caliber single shot Anschutz competition rifles.
Personally I have a bunch of stuff so it depends on what I’m feeling. Mainly I like shooting WWI-WWII era rifles. Ive got a Swedish Mauser, a M osin, M1, 1903, a couple British Enfields, a couple Swiss straight-pulls.

You have excellent gun taste (from what I can tell, I’m a layman). What kicks more/worse the Mosin or the M1? Do you giggle every time it makes the trademark ping noise?

Actually the worst is my No. 5 Mk I Enfield Jungle carbine. Of the two you mentioned its the Mosin, but not by much. Truth is most of those guns shoot cartridges of roughly the same power, so it mainly comes down to the gun weight. The M1 is about half a pound heavier, and its semi-automatic though the gas trap is very close to the muzzle so its semi-auto nature isn’t helpful in that regard. My friend has an M38 Mosin Carbine which is 9" shorter and 1.5 lbs lighter than mine and ot kicks like a damn mule. The Jungle Carbine is another half pound lighter than the M38. My shoulder hurts just thinking about it. I t also has horrible barrel whip, such that I can reliably hit the target at 50 yard sometimes.
Add yes, the M1 makes me giggle every time it ejects the en-bloc clip. So much fun!!!

That makes a lot of sense that the Carbines would be the worst. And it must be awesome! I’m envious

They are amazing pieces of equipment. These things literally win Gold medals.

I used to have a Mosin carbine that I bought for around $40. Holy hell did that puppy kick. I’d reckon it kicked harder than my 12 gauge shooting 1oz slugs. Loud as all hell too with a huge muzzle flash.

It is. I actually have 2 M1's, an regular M1 Garand which was a gift from my father in law, and an M1D sniper rifle which my 32nd birthday present to myself.
I also have an Erma Werke M1-22 Carbine W est Ge rman Army training rifle. Looks and works basically just like the smaller M1 carbine but in 22 to cut down ammo costs. I don’t have an actual M1 carbine, yet. Im saving for one of the ultra rare Rock-ola Jukebox Carbines.
I have some cool military pistols too. My favorites are an ultra-rare alloy framed Browning Hi-Power made by FN for the Austrian Border Guard, and a French Manurhin MR73 from the Gendarmie (or maybe GIGN, don't know its full story).

I notice you said “used to” hahaha
Those things hurt. Id rather shoot my pump 12 with 3" magnums.

I kind of wish I held onto it. Would have made a cool wall piece. I used to have a pretty cool collection of old communist iron. That mosin, a makarov and Yugoslavian and Romanian AK’s. I had sanded and re stained the wood on the mosin and Romanian AK so they looked pretty nice. Now I just have boring modern stuff.

I've got some communist iron myself. My coolest piece is probably a Bulgarian AK-74 sidefolder paratrooper rifle. Ive also got a Chinese SKS that I had to restore because the stock was utter shit when I got it, and a few other things. The worst are the Nagant revolvers.

Nice. I love the triangle folders. I had a modern AK104 that I swapped a vintage triangle stock along with a bakelite pistol grip and plum handguards onto. Kept a turnicate wrapped around the stock to keep it from melting my face when shooting in summer. Had a real Khyber Pass look to it.

That sounds like an awesome piece! My Bulgy is kind of plain, but I do have a Yugo 47 underfolder that was built with a parts kit scraped together from some trashed Balkans guns. One of the handguards has "Gladijator" scrawled into it, which is apparently Serbian for "Gladiator"

Yeah, you could find some interesting artwork on some of those yugo kits.

I’venever used one, but heard that the Manurhin revolvers are pretty nice shooters, and durable.

It is amazing just how good they are. Mine is lord knows how old, chipped and pitted, holster wear, everything. Yet it still locks up tighter than a drum and is still more accurate than I am. I will sing their praises from the mountaintops, they really are in a whole other leagur above S&W, Colt, Ruger, etc.
